Santa Cruz No On 8: Next StepsCommunity Meeting Nov. 16 125 people attended the townhall meeting on marriage equality held Sunday Nov. 16th at Temple Beth El in Aptos. Sponsored by the GLBT Alliance and The Diversity Center, the meeting included updates on the election (statistics for the county and state, and a look at divisive myths about "who was responsible" for the passage of Prop 8), an overview of the status of the lawsuits filed to challenge Prop 8, and a chance to acknowledge the anger, disappointment, and hope emerging after Nov. 4th. Working in 12 smaller groups, participants came up with ideas for what we will do next. Each group used one of the three likely scenarios (Supreme Court invalidates 8, Court lets 8 stand, Court sends it down to the appellate level) to brainstorm and then prioritize their ideas. As each group reported to the whole on what actions they envisioned, it became clear that regardless of which scenario actually happens, there was wide agreement on what actions must take place immediately and what steps should follow. Ready to "put theory into practice", participants then chose which of 5 "action groups" they were interested in working with. Many ideas were exchanged, and some groups will be meeting soon (meeting announcements will be posted on the website). We are currently organizing the ideas and actions generated by this meeting, and the ideas plus the "action groups" will be posted soon. Candlelight Vigil & Interfaith Service 200+ people rallied for Marriage Equality at the Santa Cruz Town Clock on Saturday, Nov. 8. With candles glowing and No on 8 signs flashing, the crowd was addressed by campaign manager Glen Schaller, Mayor Ryan Coonerty, and County Clerk Gail Pellerin. Mayor Coonerty announced that the City of Santa Cruz will be supporting the writ filed with the California Supreme Court on Nov. 5th, asking that Prop 8 be overturned. We're waiting for final results before calling the race; not all precincts are in, late and provisional ballots still need to be counted; there may be as many as 4 million votes not included in the tally. If we have lost, we'll be going forward; what shape that will take isn't something we can know yet, but this is not the end. One of the most important things to remember is that we have built a remarkable movement for LGBT rights in Santa Cruz with an enormous amount of involvement by our allies; this is something which must - and will - continue; our charge is to find the best way to do that. For four and a half months, we had the right to do something which most of the world takes for granted but which most of us never thought we'd be able to do: we had the right to marry the one we love. From June 17 to November 4, we could get married, and we did - and nothing will take those days away from us. In the very near future, The GLBT Alliance of Santa Cruz County and The Diversity Center will call a community meeting for everyone who was part of the No on 8 campaign, everyone who wishes they had been part of the No on 8 campaign, and everyone who wants to be part of the next step. To be sure you receive information about that, join our yahoo group. In the meantime, be kind to one another, be kind to yourself. Sara & Merrie
